Switzerland + Burgundy + Paris
(This website is under construction and will be up and running by July 4)

We like the contrast between a scenic trip to Switzerland and the city sophistication of Paris, and train times have been reduced to the point that this can be a practical combination.

Our suggested itinerary gives you the works, with 6 nights in Switzerland at Lucerne, Wengen, and Montreux, plus Burgundy at Dijon, and Paris. You start by flying into Zurich, where you'll be transferred to Lucerne for your first few nights, Then you take the train to Interlaken and on up the Lauterbrunnen Valley to Wengen, in the heart of the Bernese Oberland, where you're already most of the way up to the Jungfraujoch. From Wengen, you can also visit the Schilthorn and Schynigge Platte, more great mountain journeys. Then you go by train back to Interlaken where you pick up the Golden Pass train to Montreux, arriving in spectacular style at Lake Leman. You depart Switzerland for France by heading first to Lausanne, then on by TGV train to Dijon, in Burgundy.

At Dijon, you'll get a full-day tour in Burgundy. Then it's on to Paris for four nights.

You can make also make it a shorter and simpler itinerary, with just Lucerne and Paris.

Candid Comments

Train travel level of effort = high. This is an itinerary for energetic independent travelers who enjoy riding lots of trains and who relish the adventure of making the mountain journeys that make Switzerland travel unique. Apart from the effort of moving your luggage on an off 10 different trains (pack light!), there's the need to really get involved in the schedules. Regardless of how many tips we provide, this trip will still require a lot of management by you. But for the right type of traveler, it's a great journey.

You won't need to deal with your luggage on stairs. All the stations on this itinerary have escalators, elevators, or ramps.

Back to the need for managing schedules, that isn't just for the mainline trains. You will also want to ride rack railways, aerial gondolas and cable cars up to the mountain summits. Be careful to plan your days, so that you know when to get down the mountains before those services shut down for the day.

The second half of this itinerary is very easy by comparison with the Swiss part. For Burgundy and Paris, you can shift into low gear and even relax a bit.

Weather in Switzerland is always an issue.
You will be going to Lucerne for the scenery. We'd like to think that over the course of the nearly three days you will be there, the weather will cooperate, so that you can enjoy taking one of the mountain journeys. But you must always go to Switzerland prepared for clouds that may seriuosly diminish the visibility and the fun and of getting outdoors on the lake or on the mountains.

Options and Alternatives

We prefer doing this itinerary starting in Lucerne and finishing in Paris. But it can be reversed, especially is you have mroe time and want to go on past Lucerne to Italy at Lake Como or points farther south.

Beaune can be substituted for Dijon. That makes for a longer travel day when you are traveling from Lucerne.

We can easily recommend adding a third night in Burgundy and a second full-day excursion. There's plenty to do in this area.

Your tour can be set up as a private one, instead of h a small-group. That costs substantially more, but it also puts you in control of both the pace and the emphasis.
