Paris + Burgundy
Burgundy offers what may be the very best combination with Paris, because you have the benefit of fast and easy TGV train service linking Paris with Dijon in only one hour and 37 minutes. You get all the sophistication with the opportunity to see another side of France, including great countryside and the best of French wines. But don't try to do this on one of those long day trips by bus from Paris, because it's just too far by vehicle. It's the train, and the chance to stay overnight in Burgundy, that make it attractive.
For your base in Burgundy, you can use the excellent city of Dijon. Or you can choose instead to stay in Beaune, one of the most popular small towns in France, situated in the Burgundy wine country. Our suggested itinerary has you staying at both Dijon and Beaune, with touring from from Beaune with emphasis on the wineries, plus a tour from Dijon with emphasis on the charming towns and countryside, to make this a potent visit to Burgundy.
And one of the side benefits of this plan is that you get to stay twice in Paris. Sure, you could see that as being inconvenient. But we think that Paris is one city where it makes a lot of sense to stay in more than one neighborhood. We suggest staying on both sides of the river. |

Candid Comments
Train travel level of effort = easy. Your train ride between Paris and Dijon is less than two hours long. At no point in this journey do you need to take your bags up or down steps. In Dijon, you will need to go up one level to exit the station, but tthere are elevators/escalators available. And your station in Paris is Gare de Lyon, where you will enter and depart the station and access your train all on the same level.
The popularity of Beaune means LOTS of tourists. But you can explore Beaune early in the morning or during the late afternoon and evening, when the bus tours are not in town. And during your half-day tour from Beaune, you will be out in the countryside when that town is busy with visitors.
Dijon is by far the less touristy of the two places to stay. Actually, Dijon is not touristy in the least. Being a city, it lacks the kind of charm that attracts so many people to Beaune, but it has plenty to offer in its fine old town center.

Dijon is better located for visiting...the scenic countryside and small towns in the area of the Burgundy canal. You can do a fine combination tour from Dijon which divides the emphasis between wine and scenic touring.
Beaune is better situated for those whose interest is overwhelmingly on the wines. |

Options and Alternatives
|
With less time available, you can stay at one or the other, Dijon or Beaune. You can also do one Burgundy tour instead of two.
Your Burgundy tour can be set up as a private one, instead of as part of a small-group. That costs substantially more, but it also puts you in control of both the pace and the emphasis. |
