Easy Switzerland & Paris

We like the contrast between a scenic trip to Switzerland and the city sophistication of Paris, and train times have been reduced to the point that this can be a practical combination. There are train routes which use the fast TGV trains to connect Switzerland and Paris. With just one week available, you can do an easy visit to Switzerland at Lucerne and then take the train to Paris. Or you can get a much stronger dose of Switzerland with our alternate itinerary for Serious Switzerland, Burgundy, and Paris (click here).

Our suggested itinerary for Easy Switzerland and Paris can be done in just one week. You fly into Zurich, where you'll be transferred to Lucerne for your first three nights. Lucerne gives you a nice taste of Switzerland with minimal effort. You get the charming old town along the river with the covered bridges. You can take a boat ride on scenic Lake Lucerne, ringed by mountains. And you have your choice of some dramatic Alpine trips -- to Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi -- that can be done in half a day, using various combinations of rack railways, cablecars, and mountain gondolas.

When you get to Paris, you'll have a full-day tour by minibus that includes a drive around the city, a river cruise, a visit up the Eiffel Tower, and a walking tour of Montmartre. You'll also get a Paris museum pass. Between Switzerland and Paris, it's altogether a great way to spend a week.

Candid Comments

Train travel level of effort = moderately low. Compared to our alternate itinerary for "Serious Switzerland," this is a pretty simple train trip. The station at Lucerne has no steps. You make one connection, at Geneva or Basel, but you won't need to take your bags on steps at either one. And your arrival station in Paris is a convenient one, either at Gare-de-Lyon or Gare de l'Est, again with no steps required.

There is a choice of either a shorter travel time involving a short connection at Basel, for those who are comfortable with those close connections offered on the efficient Swiss rail system. Or you can have a much more comfortable connection at Geneva and a longer total travel time.

As to the need for managing schedules on this itinerary, it mostly comes down to whether you choose to do the mountain trips at Lucerne, which are certainly optional. Going up to Mount Pilatus requires taking a train or boat to reach a rack railway that goes up one side of the mountain, then coming back down on a combination of gondola and cablecar. At Mount Rigi, you take a train to reach another rack railway up one side of the mountain, then take a different rack railway, or a gondola, down the other side, where you catch a boat on the lake back to Lucerne. For most people, that all amounts to a fun day trip, but it does take effort to manage the schedules and find your way around. The people at the tourist office in Lucerne, at the main station, can show you the details.

Options and Alternatives

This itinerary can be expanded to be part of a larger trip. You can tie into Italy by train between Lucerne and either Lake Como or Milan, so you can start or finish your trip in Italy.

You can also extend the itinerary from Paris into Belgium at Bruges, flying out of the airport at Brussels.
