Amsterdam + Paris + Bruges

Here's a variation on one of the best city combinations you can do by train in Europe. You probably know that fast Thalys trains connect Amsterdam, Brussels, and Paris. With as little as a week to spend in Europe, you can sample three important cities and string them together between handy major airports at Amsterdam and Paris.
Our proposed variation is to substitute Bruges for Brussels. You are welcome to use Brussels as the middle destination, but we think Bruges provides more appeal as well as more contrast with Amsterdam and Paris. Even with the extra train time and connections required at Brussels to make the extension to Bruges, this is still an efficient train itinerary. |

Candid Comments
Train travel level of effort = moderate. All stations have elevators and/or escalators, so you should not need to drag your luggage up or down steps at the stations. There will be two train connections, one between Amsterdam and Bruges, and one between Bruges and Paris. The connections normally are made at Brussels Midi Station, where you will need to change levels for the connection. Signage there is fairly good. The Paris station is Nord, where you will arrive and depart the station on one level.
Your longest rides -- between Amsterdam and Brussels and between Brussels and Paris -- will be on the premium Thalys trains, which are particularly comfortable. The shorter rides which connect Bruges and Brussels Midi will be typical inter-city trains but fairly comfortable. The biggest effort will be in getting on and off the trains with luggage. While there may be opportunities to place your bags on luggage racks on the trains, you should be prepared for hoisting your bags onto overhead bins. |

Options and Alternatives

We much prefer doing this itinerary starting in Amsterdam and finishing in Paris. We like earthy Amsterdam, but we want you to finish in the elegance of Paris. Also, it's easier to fly into Schiphol Airport at Amsterdam than to fly out, because of how they organize security there. But if you wish, we can do it in reverse.
We can certainly use Brussels in place of Bruges, if you prefer. We like Brussels but don't consider it as compelling a destination as Bruges. Bruges adds a relatively relaxing, more scenic element into this itinerary, while Brussels is earthier, much busier, and has little of the charm of Bruges. |
